Edsger W. Dikjstra was originally from Holland, and while working his way through college, decided to devote more time to programming and less to theoretical physics, eventually becoming a early programmer in the just-developing profession. He was a professor in the Department of Computer Sciences at the University of Texas at Austin. It isn't very clear what his connection was to Burroughs.
